Follow Friday - 11/11/11

Follow Friday is a weekly meme hosted by Parajunkee and Alison can read. Each week participants are given a prompt. This week's is:

Q: In light of 11.11.11 and Veteran’s Day tell us about your favorite soldier and how he or she is saving the world. Fictional or real life.

I've had a think about this an I'm not really sure. I don't tend to watch many war films or read books about soldiers. No one on my dad's side of the family was ever sent to the front lines in either war as they were farmers and needed to run their farms. I think my mum's mum's uncle lost his life in the First World War, so I could thank him for giving his life to ensure the rights of the generations to come. As 11/11 is about remembering those who lost their lives during that horrible time, it would be fitting to honour him in such a way as well. But I don't even know his name.

So I'm also going to thank Captain Blackadder (Rowan Atkinson), Private Baldrick (Tony Robinson), Lieutenant George (Huh Laurie), Captain Darling (Tim McInnerny), and General Melchett (Stephen Fry). Especially George for going out into the mine fields and painting the German troops with all their elephants.
(You won't understand that joke unless you've seen the series.)

  2. Just stopping by, saw your comment about Napoleon on another blog, and wanted to say I definitely see your point, even if it might be considered controversial. It made me think of Prince Vlad Dracula - I watch documentaries about him every Halloween (ha), and his case sounds a lot like what you brought up for Napoleon. Dracula is considered a national hero in Romania, because of his success in keeping their country safe from outside invaders, but his methods have him branded as cruel (though his methods really weren't so unusual for his time period).

I also relate to your personal anecdote. I also have a lot of ancestors who I know served, but I don't know any details beyond that simple fact. I hope to find out more someday.

  7. that show reminds me of another british one, what was it called, the one with the french cafe shop owner, the invading germans and british pilots they couldn't understand. 'Allo! 'Allo!, or something of that sort. :) I use to think that was the funniest thing, when I was a kid.

Thanks for stopping by my blog, I'm following you too now.

New Follower. Come see my Friday! And have a great weekend!

  10. Flanders pigeon murderer! Sorry, I LOVE that particular series of Blackadder and the way that in amongst the humour they managed to bring across some of what it was like to be in those trenches.

  11. Some people have friends and/or family who served or who is serving in the military. Other people aren’t really keen on the long-standing war and really have no answer at all.

As for me? I don’t know anyone who is serving or who has served so I decided to go with what I want and chose a fictional soldier as an answer. The thing is, I had four prime candidates! I did eventually end up with one with a lengthy explanation. Care to know who it is? Follow me back to http://www.howardsherman.net and find out!

In celebration of today’s cool date of 11/11/11 I’m offering a special $11 discount off all my interactive fiction books! Sure I’m a book blogger but I’m also an author. All the details of the $11 off on 11/11/11 is at the bottom of my Follow Friday blog post.

Since I’m posting this kind of late just add 'FF’ to the coupon code and it’ll be valid all weekend long!

    Thank God it’s Follow Friday!
